Question 1

What exactly is GEO?

Accepted Answer

Generative Engine Optimization, building the topical authority, entity clarity and multi-source presence that influences how generative AI models synthesize their answers, rather than optimizing for a single extractable citation.

Question 2

How is GEO different from AEO?

Accepted Answer

AEO targets a single question with a single, extractable answer, think featured snippets. GEO is broader: it's about shaping how models blend multiple sources into an original response about your brand or category, winning across many related prompts rather than one query at a time.

Question 3

Can you control what AI models say about my brand?

Accepted Answer

Not directly control, no one can. What GEO does is stack the odds: consistent, accurate, authoritative information across the sources models draw from tends to get reflected in what they generate. It's influence through authority, not a lever you can pull.

Question 4

How do you measure GEO success?

Accepted Answer

By tracking how often and how accurately your brand gets mentioned across models and markets, the same method behind the Canary Mail numbers above, broken out by country and by model.

Question 5

Is GEO relevant for local businesses?

Accepted Answer

Less so. GEO matters most for brands competing on broad category authority (SaaS, B2B, national or global brands). Local businesses usually get more value from Local SEO and AEO first.
