How much does SEO cost in 2026? Real prices by country, platform and provider, and what the cheap tiers actually deliver

The same work gets quoted at $300 and $3,000 a month depending on who you ask and where they sit. Here are the real numbers, and how to tell what you are actually buying.

The short answer

SEO in 2026 costs anywhere from $250 to $10,000 a month, and most businesses spend between $500 and $5,000. The three most-cited surveys disagree on the averages and agree on the shape. Ahrefs polled 439 providers and found an average agency retainer of $3,209, freelancers at $1,349 and consultants at $3,250, with hourly averages of $99 (agencies), $72 (freelancers) and $171 (consultants). Backlinko’s 2026 survey of more than 300 professionals puts the typical retainer at $1,000 to $2,500 and the typical hourly rate at $50 to $100. Clutch’s 2026 data, drawn from more than 65,000 listed agencies and their client reviews, puts most agencies at $100 to $149 an hour and the average monthly project cost at $3,199. In all three, the single most common retainer band is $501 to $1,000 a month. The number you are quoted depends far more on where the provider sits and how they are set up than on what your site needs, which is why the rest of this article is about reading a quote, not just collecting them.

Provider typeGlobal average (Ahrefs, 2026)Typical range you will see
Agency$3,209 a month (Ahrefs); $99 an hour (Ahrefs), $100 to $149 (Clutch)$1,500 to $10,000+ a month in the US, UK and EU; from ₹20,000 (about $250) a month in India
Freelancer$1,349 a month; $72 an hour (Ahrefs); $50 to $100 an hour typical (Backlinko)$500 to $3,000 a month in the West; ₹8,000 to ₹60,000 (about $100 to $700) a month in India
Consultant (senior, strategy-led)$3,250 a month; $171 an hour (Ahrefs); $125 to $180 an hour for 7 to 10+ years’ experience (Backlinko)$100 to $300 an hour in the West; senior India-based consultants serving international clients sit well below that
Platform freelancer (Upwork, Fiverr)Upwork median about $21 an hour$15 to $35 an hour for most listings; $80 to $140 for the senior end; Fiverr gigs from $5 to a few hundred
One-off audit or projectFreelancers $2,349, consultants $8,686, agencies $9,508 per project (Ahrefs); $2,501 to $5,000 the most common band$300 to $5,000 for an audit depending on site size and who does it; migrations and rebuilds more

Nearly four in five providers bill a flat monthly fee, so that is the shape most quotes take. Experience moves the price inside every band: Ahrefs found providers with five to ten years charging $3,648 a month on average against $1,541 for those with two years or less. The question to ask of every monthly number is the same: how many hours, from whom, on what.

Prices by country

This is the part most pricing guides skip, because most of them are written by agencies in one country. The spread is real and it is large.

Where the provider is basedHourlyMonthly, typicalNotes
United States, Canada, Australia$100 to $149 for most agencies (Clutch); $75 to $300 across freelancers and consultants$1,500 to $10,000+79% of US and Canadian providers charge over $1,000 a month (Ahrefs)
United Kingdom and Western EuropeRoughly the same as North America at the senior end (£60 to £250, €70 to €280)£1,000 to £8,000+London and the big EU capitals at the top; regional providers lower
Eastern Europe (Poland, Ukraine, Romania)$25 to $99 (Clutch: Poland $50 to $99, Ukraine $25 to $49)$800 to $3,000Strong technical talent; the usual choice for European clients who want lower rates in their own timezone
India₹500 to ₹8,000 (about $6 to $95); most agencies under $25 on Clutch₹8,000 to ₹2,00,000+ (about $100 to $2,400)76% of India-based SEOs charge $1,000 a month or less; the senior end serves international clients at international-facing rates
Philippines₱1,500 to ₱5,000 (about $27 to $90) for consulting; most agencies under $25 on ClutchFreelancers ₱5,000 to ₱15,000 (about $90 to $270); agencies ₱15,000 to ₱150,000+ ($270 to $2,700+)Strong English, US-hours availability; a common home for outsourced link building and content
Pakistan, Southeast Asia, Latin America$8 to $45 (Clutch: Mexico $25 to $49)$300 to $2,000Same logic as India: a wide range with excellent people at the top and packages at the bottom

Exchange rates move, so treat the dollar equivalents as approximate. The pattern does not move: Backlinko puts US-based services at three to five times emerging-market prices, and Clutch’s agency data shows a four- to six-fold gap between the top and bottom hourly bands for the same task done to the same standard.

India, in rupees and in dollars

Because I am based here and because most international buyers now know India is where a lot of the world’s SEO gets done, it deserves its own section. Freelancers in India typically charge ₹8,000 to ₹60,000 a month for Indian clients and more for international ones; agencies start around ₹20,000 a month and run past ₹2,00,000 for enterprise work; hourly rates run from ₹500 for juniors to ₹8,000 for senior specialists. At roughly ₹85 to the dollar, that is about $100 to $700 a month for a freelancer and $250 to $2,400 for an agency.

Two things international clients should know. First, a good share of the SEO sold by Western agencies is subcontracted to teams in India anyway; you may already be buying Indian hours at a London markup. Second, the bottom of the Indian market is where the damaging packages live: the ₹5,000-a-month gig that promises 200 keywords and delivers directory links and spun blog posts. They exist because they are cheap to produce, not because anyone in India thinks they work.

The freelance platforms

Upwork

Upwork’s own hiring guide puts most SEO listings at $15 to $35 an hour with a median around $21, while senior practitioners with proven track records charge $80 to $140 and the top specialists more. Upwork adds a client marketplace fee on top of the freelancer’s rate, and holds payment in escrow, which is the reason many first-time buyers start there. The trap is sorting by price. The way to use it: filter for Top Rated, a job success score above 90%, several hundred hours billed, and read the reviews for words like “enquiries”, “leads” and “revenue” rather than “great communicator”.

Fiverr

Gigs from $5 to a few hundred dollars, sold as packages: “complete on-page SEO”, “100 high-authority backlinks”, “monthly SEO for your website”. Fiverr’s own listings put the average backlink gig around $77, and its buying guide describes $50 as the price of a quick technical audit, not a campaign. At the $20 to $50 level you are buying a template task, often automated, sometimes harmful (bought links are a Google spam policy violation). At the top of Fiverr there are competent people selling defined tasks, such as a technical audit or a set of page rewrites, and for a defined task that can be good value. It is not where you buy a strategy.

Freelancer.com, PeoplePerHour, Toptal and the rest

Same logic. The marketplace sets the floor very low and the ceiling fairly high; the price on the listing tells you the hours, the profile tells you the person. Toptal and similar curated networks sit at Western agency rates with a vetting layer on top.

What each budget actually buys

Divide the monthly fee by a fair hourly rate for that provider’s country and you have the hours. Then ask whether those hours can do the job.

Monthly budgetFrom a senior US/UK provider (~$120/h)From a senior India-based provider (~$30 to $50/h)What that means
$3002 to 3 hours6 to 10 hoursWest: a check-in, not a campaign. India: enough for a small local site’s basics, if the person is good
$1,0008 hours20 to 30 hoursWest: a light programme for a simple site. India: a real programme for a small business
$3,00025 hours60 to 100 hoursWest: a proper campaign for a competitive local or small national market. India: the same, with room for content and outreach
$5,000+40 hours+100 hours+Competitive national or e-commerce markets, multiple countries, or large sites

The hours are the point. A $500 package that cannot show you ten hours of work is not a bargain; it is a report.

Why the same work costs ten times more in some places

Cost of living, office rent, sales teams, account managers and margins. Not skill. Google’s algorithm does not know where your consultant lives, and the tools, the data and the techniques are identical everywhere. What does genuinely differ between providers, wherever they are: how well they communicate, whether their hours overlap with yours, how mature their process is, and whether they will tell you no. Those are the things to check, and they are checkable in one call.

Where I sit, honestly

I am based in Chandigarh, India. My clients are in the US, the UK, Europe and the Gulf, and my working hours overlap with theirs. My prices reflect where I live, not where they live, and the work is senior because I lead it personally and stay hands-on. Every site needs different hours, so what I publish is where I start, not a rate card; you get a fixed monthly scope in writing after a free look at your site, with the hours behind it, before you decide anything. If you want the cheapest option, I am not it. If you want a Western agency’s price, I am not that either.

Where I start
  • $40The paid consultation: one hour of answers, one-off. Hiring me for ongoing work starts with a free intro call.

Every ongoing engagement is a fixed monthly scope in writing, with the hours behind it, after a free look at your site. How a project starts.

Red flags at any price

  • “Guaranteed page one rankings.” Nobody controls Google. This is the oldest trick in the industry and it sells at every price point.
  • A fee with no hours or deliverables behind it.
  • Twelve-month contracts before any work has proved itself.
  • Links sold by the hundred. That is a spam policy violation waiting to happen.
  • Reports full of “keywords in the top 100” and nothing about enquiries.
  • Nobody will tell you who actually does the work.

A worked example

Composite example: details changed, numbers typical of what I see rather than one named client.

A dental clinic in Leeds gets three quotes. A London agency: £2,500 a month, a named account manager, a monthly report, work done by a team the clinic will never meet; about 15 to 20 hours of actual work at agency rates. An India-based freelancer found on Upwork with Top Rated status and 900 hours billed: $700 a month, about 20 to 25 hours, direct contact, examples with numbers. A Fiverr “monthly local SEO” package: $150, an automated audit, ten directory submissions and two blog posts nobody would read. The clinic picks the freelancer, asks for the hours in writing, and gets the Business Profile and service pages rebuilt in the first six weeks. The London quote was not overpriced for London; it was simply buying the same hours with more people around them. The Fiverr package was not cheap; it was nothing.

What this means for you

  • Local service business: you need 15 to 25 good hours a month, not a team. That is $500 to $1,500 from a senior person in India or Eastern Europe, or $2,000 to $3,500 from a Western freelancer. Either can work; the hours are what matter.
  • E-commerce: budget scales with catalogue size and competition, and technical work is a large share. $1,500 to $5,000 a month buys a serious programme from a senior offshore provider; the same scope from a Western agency is $4,000 to $10,000.
  • B2B or SaaS: content and links dominate the cost, and quality of writing matters, so vet the writer as carefully as the strategist. $2,000 to $6,000 a month is a realistic range for a senior provider wherever they are based.

Five questions to ask before you sign any SEO proposal

  1. “How many hours a month is this, and who does them?” A number and a name. Without both, you are buying hope.
  2. “What exactly happens in month one, and what will I be able to read?” An audit and a dated plan, not “onboarding”.
  3. “Where will the links come from?” Named types of sites and a method. “Our network” means paid links.
  4. “What happens if I stop after three months?” The answer tells you how confident they are in the work.
  5. “What will the monthly report measure?” If it is not enquiries, calls or revenue, ask why.

Not sure what your site needs, or whether a quote you have is fair? Send me the URL and the quote. I will tell you what the hours look like and whether it fits, and I will say so if the other quote is the better one.

Quick answers

Is cheap SEO from India bad?

No. Location sets the price, not the quality. India has excellent senior SEOs, and it also has $99 packages that will damage your site. The same is true of the US at ten times the price. Judge the person and the plan: hours, deliverables, examples, who does the work. The $99 package is bad anywhere in the world.

Why is Upwork so much cheaper than an agency?

Because you are paying for a person, not an office, a sales team and account managers. The median SEO rate on Upwork is about $21 an hour, but the senior end of the platform charges $80 to $140, which is close to agency rates. Filter by Top Rated status, job success, hours billed and reviews that mention results, not by the lowest rate.

Should I pay hourly or monthly?

Hourly for advice and audits, where you want expertise and not volume. Monthly for ongoing execution, where you want a predictable scope. Ask for the hours behind any monthly fee so you know what you are buying either way.

Can I pay for SEO based on results?

Rarely, and be careful. Pay-on-performance deals usually target easy keywords that do not bring customers, or lock you into long contracts. Pay for defined work and judge it on enquiries.

What do I get for $500 a month?

From a senior person in the US or UK, about three to five hours: a light audit and a few fixes, not a campaign. From a senior person in India, twenty hours or more: a real programme for a local or small business site. From a $500 agency package anywhere, usually a report and some directory submissions. Ask for the hours.
