AEO explained: how to get Google’s AI and ChatGPT to quote your business, not your competitor

Search stopped being ten blue links. Here is how to be the answer instead of just another result.

What is answer engine optimization?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of writing and structuring your content so that answer engines, meaning Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, voice assistants, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, can pull a direct answer from your page and name you as the source. Classic SEO gets you a link on a results page. AEO gets you quoted inside the answer itself.

That distinction matters because a growing share of searches now end without a click. If your business is not the answer, you are not in the conversation at all. The good news: most of your competitors have not done this work, and the bar is lower than you think.

AEO vs SEO: what actually changes

Everything you already know about SEO still applies. Crawlable pages, fast loading, clear internal links, real authority. AEO adds a layer on top:

  • The unit of content shifts from the page to the passage. An answer engine lifts one paragraph, one list, one table. Each section of your page has to stand on its own.
  • The query shifts from keywords to questions. People ask “how much does a local SEO campaign cost for a dentist” not “local SEO dentist cost”. Your headings should mirror the question.
  • Proof moves up. Engines prefer passages that state the answer and then back it up with a number, a step, an example. Vague copy gets skipped.
  • Entity clarity becomes a ranking factor. The engine needs to know exactly who you are, what you do and where, from your site and from other sites that mention you.

How answer engines choose who to quote

From the pages I have watched win and lose these placements, five signals decide it:

  1. A direct answer, early. The question in the heading, the answer in the first sentence under it. Forty to sixty words, no wind-up.
  2. Specificity. “Most local campaigns land between $500 and $2,000 a month” beats “pricing varies”. Numbers, ranges, steps, names.
  3. Corroboration. The engine checks whether other sources agree with your claim. Original but consistent with reality wins. Contrarian for the sake of it loses.
  4. Structure the machine can parse. Real headings, real lists, real tables. Not a wall of text and not a screenshot of a table.
  5. Freshness and authorship. A visible author, a real date, a page that was updated this year. Engines are cautious about anonymous, stale content.

The 8-point AEO checklist for pages you already have

You do not need a rebuild or an agency. Take your ten most important pages and run this list on each one, yourself or with whoever writes for you.

  1. Pick the one question the page exists to answer. Put it in the H1 or the first H2, worded the way a customer would say it out loud.
  2. Answer it in the first paragraph. One clear, complete sentence, then one sentence of proof. If someone read only that paragraph, they should have the answer.
  3. Break the page into question-shaped sections. Every H2 is a follow-up question. Every section answers it in the first line.
  4. Convert prose into structure where it fits. Steps become numbered lists. Comparisons become tables. Options become bullet lists. Keep paragraphs to three sentences.
  5. Add a “quick answers” block at the end. Three to five short questions and answers that cover what people ask after reading. Mark it up with FAQPage schema.
  6. Name the entity. Your business name, what you do, and who you serve should appear in plain text, consistently, and match your Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and every directory listing.
  7. Show the author. A real name, a photo, a one-line credential, a date. Link it to a page about that person.
  8. Link the answer to the next step. An answer engine sends you a reader who already trusts you. Give them one obvious next action on the page: a check, a call, a quote.

A quick example: before and after

Before: “At our agency we believe every business deserves a tailored approach to search. Our experienced team works closely with you to understand your unique needs and craft a strategy that delivers results.”

After: “How long does SEO take to work? For most small business sites, expect the first measurable movement in 8 to 12 weeks and meaningful lead growth by month six. The timeline depends on three things: how competitive your keywords are, the technical state of your site, and how quickly content and links can be produced.”

The second version can be quoted. The first one cannot. That is the whole game.

How to measure AEO

  • Google Search Console: track impressions and position for question-style queries. A jump in impressions with a flat click-through rate often means you are being shown in an AI Overview.
  • Manual checks: once a month, ask Google, ChatGPT and Perplexity the ten questions your buyers ask. Note who is cited. Screenshot it. That is your real scoreboard.
  • Analytics referrals: filter for traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. Small numbers today, growing every quarter.
  • Branded search: when AI answers mention you, people go and search your name. Watch branded query volume.

What this means for you

  • Local service business: the questions are “how much does X cost”, “how long does X take”, “do I need a permit for X”. Answer them plainly on your service pages, with your area named, and you become the local answer.
  • E-commerce: buying-guide questions (“which size”, “is X compatible with Y”, “how to clean X”) belong on the category and product pages in short form, not only on a blog.
  • B2B or SaaS: comparison and “how do I” questions decide shortlists. Definition-first pages for each use case, with a named author, are what get cited.

Where to start this week

Take your single most valuable service page. Rewrite the opening so it answers the main question in the first sixty words. Turn the body into question-shaped sections. Add a quick answers block. Then check the page in an AI engine two weeks later. Repeat for the next page.

If you want a second pair of eyes on which pages to start with, send me the URL and I will tell you. No charge, no pitch. The form is at the bottom of this page.

Quick answers

Is AEO the same as SEO?

No. SEO gets your page listed for a query. AEO gets your answer quoted inside the response, whether that response is an AI Overview, a featured snippet, a voice reply or a ChatGPT answer. AEO builds on solid SEO; it does not replace it.

Do I need schema markup for AEO?

It helps, but it is not the first thing. Clear, direct answers in the visible text matter more. Add FAQPage, HowTo and Article schema once the answers themselves are good.

How long does AEO take to show results?

Restructured pages that already rank can appear in AI answers within a few weeks of being recrawled. Brand new pages take longer because they need to earn trust first.

Can a small business compete in AI answers?

Yes, often more easily than in classic rankings. Answer engines pull from whoever explains a specific question best, not whoever has the biggest domain.
